Chapter Status

Student Organizations (SO) are members of the MSU community. With this membership comes benefits and responsibilities. The Student Rights and Responsibilities and other student conduct policies form the basis for the behavioral expectations in the MSU community. Alleged violations of the MSU Student Organization Conduct Policies and Procedures by a SO will be adjudicated by the Office of Student Support and Accountability (OSSA). Alleged conduct violations by individual SO officers or members will also be adjudicated by the OSSA, as prescribed in the Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Fraternities and sororities affiliated with the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council or Panhellenic Council must abide by the conduct policies established by their respective governing body, as well as the Student Rights and Responsibilities, and MSU SO Conduct Policies and Procedures.

The primary intent of the SO disciplinary process is to guide behavior and correct misconduct in a manner consistent with University policies and procedures. Through education and promoting critical decision-making, the disciplinary process seeks to help SOs avoid future misconduct and repair any harm done. As such, sanctions levied in the disciplinary process will be commensurate with the seriousness of the offense, with the understanding that repeat violations may justify increasingly severe sanctions.

Definition of Statuses

  • Temporary Restraining Action (TRA): An interim measure (restraining at least one element of an organization's activity/operation), which is imposed if the SO’s continued operation or conduct threatens immediate and irreparable harm to the health or safety of persons or property.
  • Interim Suspension: The SO is prohibited from participating in and/or hosting events. This includes any activity or function of the SO which serves to promote the goals, purposes, identity, programs, membership, or activities of the SO. Interim suspension prohibits the SO from participating in and/or hosting meetings, philanthropic events, academic activities, and community service. The SO maintains responsibility for completing all University requirements to maintain their registration status during the course of the investigation as appropriate.
  • Social Probation: The SO is prohibited from participating in and/or hosting events of a social nature. This may include meetings for the organization, events with other student organizations, or any other event that is strictly meant for social purposes. Social Probation does not preclude the SO from participating in or hosting meetings, philanthropic events, academic activities, and/or community services.
  • Probation: The SO will be observed and evaluated to ensure compliance with University policies and regulations. Additional infractions that occur during the probationary period may result in more severe sanctions being imposed against the SO. Note: Probation does not restrict the chapter’s ability to participate in Fraternity and Sorority Life functions beyond restrictions specifically outlined.
  • Deferred Loss of Registration: The SO remains recognized and affiliated with Michigan State University, but the Loss of Registration status is suspended for a specified period. During this time, the SO must comply with all outlined sanctions and avoid any additional violations of University policy. If the SO meet all conditions and does not commit further violations, the Deferred Loss of Registration status will expire on the end date. If the SO fails to comply or violates any additional policies, the Loss of Registration will be enforced immediately, and the SO will be involuntarily separated from the University for the specified period or permanently.
  • Loss of Registration: The SO may be involuntarily separated from the University for a specified period or permanently. The SO may not be affiliated with or registered as a SO at Michigan State University until the end date. The length of the removal is commensurate with the significant impact of the behaviors which occurred in violation of multiple policies. Conditions for return may be imposed.
